2005 Report:
Thursday 23rd June was the date chosen for the annual PRFC Golf Society Day, held this year at Slinfold Park Golf and Country Club. It was also the hottest day of the year, with the temperature hovering around 30 degrees in the shade. In spite of this, 15 golfers of varying abilities competed over 36 holes in unbroken sunshine.
The morning round was an 18 hole Stableford competition for the prestigious Claret Jug, won on the last two occasions by Paddy Fane. This year was not to be a hat-trick for him, as the top points scorer was Simon Hawken with 37 points, Paddy was 2nd with 32, and Matt Francis a very creditable 3rd with 31.
After a leisurely ploughmans lunch and a large liquid intake, the afternoon round was a light-hearted team Texas Scramble. John Faulkner decided to hire a buggy, and the 1st three set off with Faulkner driving, Charlie Francis riding shotgun, and Julian Ray clinging to the back with the Golf Clubs, rather like General Patton it was said! It was a close run thing between 1st and 2nd, 68 and 69 points, but Faulkner, Francis and Ray held on to win from Tommo, Roger Brown and Alex Steele. All complaints of the buggy being an unfair advantage were, naturally, discounted.
There now followed the Prize Giving. The main competitions have already been mentioned, but there were also: Longest Drive: Phil Jennings. Nearest the Pin: Roger Brown. Stick to Rugby Prize: Will Papworth, for breaking his 7 iron - the head went further than the ball! In addition, a special token of the Society's appreciation went to Paddy Fane, without who's Corporate Membership of Slinfold, we would not have been able to negotiate such a good price for the day. Thanks again, Paddy. Thanks also to Ade Brown from the White Horse, who kindly got Fullers to donate some prizes.
We hope to have another outing sometime in September or October, but not on such a grand scale. Emails will be sent out nearer the time, when there will also be the opportunity to buy a PRFC GS shirt, so if you know of anyone who'd like to play who has connections with the club, please get them to contact us.
Lastly, thanks to everyone who played in such gruelling heat, and we hope you enjoyed your day. I hear PJ spent £12 on water!!!
Tommo and Jules
